I've made this much easier at home by preparing hominy in a similar style, with much less fat. <br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Cotija is a cow's milk-cheese that is crumbly in texture and salty in flavor, similar to feta, and it doesn't melt. I prepared a simple can of white or yellow hominy by draining then adding lemon juice. When microwaved, the lemon flavor is steamed and infused into the hominy. I then mixed with Cotija cheese and smoked paprika. I love the added zing of the lemon and the flavor is exactly like the street corn version. <br /></p><p style="text-align: left;">The canned food makes for a humble but satisfying lunch or side dish, with only four ingredients. You can adjust proportions to your personal taste. This is an easy dish kids can make themselves, as long as they can handle a can opener. <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFSb3Zngs6ZXrqKWtPpmHm51OXQiRshqcbhkyMd5K_CJiIFF_Nl-1hiOVLF68TDKkFwn1c-aG5LhJx-SBG5vtnaQxX1IjbwsVnt2KErRequU9LoZW-l26o3R0fadGKJqBxPkcQrL3P6Eg/s2048/17BA0605-E255-47E8-8722-C0D9C540AC85.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFSb3Zngs6ZXrqKWtPpmHm51OXQiRshqcbhkyMd5K_CJiIFF_Nl-1hiOVLF68TDKkFwn1c-aG5LhJx-SBG5vtnaQxX1IjbwsVnt2KErRequU9LoZW-l26o3R0fadGKJqBxPkcQrL3P6Eg/w300-h400/17BA0605-E255-47E8-8722-C0D9C540AC85.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div><p style="text-align: center;"><b>Mexican Street Corn-Inspired Hominy</b></p><div style="text-align: justify;">1 can Hominy</div><div style="text-align: justify;">2 Tbsp Lemon Juice </div><div style="text-align: justify;">1/4 to 1/2 Cup Cotija Cheese </div><div style="text-align: justify;">1/4 Tbsp Smoked Paprika or to taste </div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Drain the hominy. The tea tins that I emptied over a few months were so cute, I didn't want to just waste the containers by throwing them away. Instead I used the tea tins as vases for some silk flower arrangements. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">I got some floral foam, and bought out of season artificial florals from Michaels. I really enjoyed the chance to be creative putting together the floral arrangements. I only spent about 20 minutes on each one. I attached the lid of the tea tin to the side of the arrangement too. I'd done floral arranging in 4-H when I was young, and entered some arrangements in the county fair, many years ago. I don't have much counter space in my tiny home, so I don't often have fresh flowers in my apartment. So I haven't had much need to practice arranging in years. It was fun to arrange the types of flowers for height and composition in a way that was pleasing to me. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">As I said, I don't have much room for arrangements in my tiny home, so I thought I'd take them to a local senior center to give them away when finished. But fortuitously, someone on a local facebook group put out a call for flowers after her mom was hospitalized following a car accident. So I did make someone's day with my flowers! <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifUEWcJw3X6SSN1Bm-6viSIjugodDpvGNfnEAki2xIepSv0SMr9yOQB_I0HYEsgtr35pzzSwDDWTKBrlKrlF5ryYxPczpk8h_IiJQIEoMSyPcqNo6Sx-pwW3FWSO50HLyQK_ze_IGxGX0/s2048/C7863B26-AFBC-4AEE-98B0-3A5FC28440D6.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifUEWcJw3X6SSN1Bm-6viSIjugodDpvGNfnEAki2xIepSv0SMr9yOQB_I0HYEsgtr35pzzSwDDWTKBrlKrlF5ryYxPczpk8h_IiJQIEoMSyPcqNo6Sx-pwW3FWSO50HLyQK_ze_IGxGX0/w300-h400/C7863B26-AFBC-4AEE-98B0-3A5FC28440D6.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div><p></p>Ellenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06577914443944550903noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1476186813399041481.post-47094968963751064652020-12-30T12:32:00.004-08:002021-05-23T13:43:10.714-07:00Holiday Greeting 2020<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgStZfGvbQuD1aSHIVlkTEvrJSDKaLjN6c4PP5nhm-or2qzCwgSSEK0da0U2qOSOgZhUUNfdqNzLoRFENmAoaefdaMfVwtH_-Q2ejEUAIwyb4HyjV6GLfIY6ZGK9vlx8nqTY7bQ3i54NPg/s2048/EB4545F4-EB4A-4B0F-849F-6D0838E6C4D2.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1525" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgStZfGvbQuD1aSHIVlkTEvrJSDKaLjN6c4PP5nhm-or2qzCwgSSEK0da0U2qOSOgZhUUNfdqNzLoRFENmAoaefdaMfVwtH_-Q2ejEUAIwyb4HyjV6GLfIY6ZGK9vlx8nqTY7bQ3i54NPg/w298-h400/EB4545F4-EB4A-4B0F-849F-6D0838E6C4D2.jpeg" width="298" /></a></div><p style="text-align: justify;">Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, our Christmas photo for 2020 had to be a do-it-yourself version. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Ellen, Claire, and Callie! Claire is 15 or so this year - adopted 13-plus years ago, and I am conscious of every day I have with her. So I am appreciating the holidays even more this year. Callie is celebrating her second Christmas and first adoptiversary with me. She is my cuddlebug. I appreciate all the friends and family who support us and include us in their lives. Sending wishes for peace and joy throughout 2020, with hopes for new opportunity around every corner. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
My friends at Melissa's World Produce have wonderful blogger events througout the year, usually involving a cookbook demo and signing. But their Christmas party is the event I look forward to each year, as the agenda is turned over to the bloggers themselves, with a dessert competition and an appetizer competition. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This year, I was out of town for Thanksgiving with my family, then came home to begin a job that ended two days before Christmas. I took a day off work to attend the Melissa's event - that's how important it is to me - but had little time for baking. So I didn't get to enter the dessert competition, but I did manage to enter the appetizer competition with Umami Deviled Eggs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
At Easter in my family, my uncle always brought the deviled egg plate. And you never knew which one would contain an unseemly amount of some hot spice, meant to prank my dad or his brother. Now that my uncle has passed, the task of making them has been handed slowly over to my mom, but I've never been invited to pitch in. So I'd actually never made a deviled egg until the morning of the competition. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
One of my favorite vegetables is mushrooms. While grocery shopping I came upon a product called Chaga Mushroom Powder. I wasn't sure how I would use it, but I was intrigued, and I bought it. Wanting to put a twist on the regular deviled egg for the competition, the mushroom powder came to mind. Would it make a savory complement to a more common recipe? I had to try it out. They turned out wonderfully! The color is dark due to the mushroom powder, but if you know what's in the dish, it's not off-putting. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
On the day of the competition, I couldn't find a cake decorating tip in my kitchen. I drove to the location with the bag of filling separate from the eggs. It's a good thing I did, because driving on LA freeways, I was forced to come to a sudden stop, and the plate of hard boiled eggs went flying in my car! I lost half the servings I was planning to have for the competition, but this meant I had plenty of filling for the eggs that were left. I made sure to demo the Chaga Mushroom Powder next to my dish so all the taste testers would know to expect a savory flavor profile and would understand the dark coloring. If I were making this again for my own home holiday party, I might experiment with food coloring for the filling.</div>

<b>Umami Deviled Eggs</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
18 cooked hard boiled eggs, peeled</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1/2 cup mayonnaise (I like Kraft Real Mayo)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 Tbsp lemon juice</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1 tsp Chaga Mushroom Powder</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1/2 tsp Smoked Paprika</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1/4 tsp dried mustard </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Halve the hard boiled eggs and empty the yolk into mixing bowl. Wash the eggs for presentation when filled. Add all other ingredients to mixing bowl and combine. Put a decorating tip onto a ziploc bag and fill the bag with the mixture. Pipe the mixture into the eggs for an appealing look. Garnish with parsley, paprika, or any other herb if desired. <b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Do you serve deviled eggs at other occasions besides Easter? What ingredients are in your favorite recipe? </div>

This week's watercolor lesson was about painting shadows. I arrived after the lecture, so just took a stab at it, with occasional comments from the instructor. My sample painting also had a lot of white in it, which I really haven't learned to approach as of yet. I did have fun mixing paint pigments though, and each lesson teaches you something. I am stretching way out of my comfort zone this summer, and I'm proud of myself for that.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In today's watercolor class, we learned to use candle wax, saran wrap, and salt (table salt, rock salt, or margarita salt) to create textured effects in our watercolors. The professor called today's lesson "Gimmicks." I had such fun trying them all out.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhMFKislhOxEMzwVKUk8jm1QLPUzAAyrZvYNlqM8KHoGKkaRJAFwUqBni1uMeOFe3vIsFlfQ6A_-ypHJYqFwDtGTpg8ZmROk43gOuUU4d7JGRjfHyuNNRVuIJer8v7IxA5inKYaO78gUw/s1600/87144439-C9BB-4A6C-88A7-C8D46BAA16AA.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhMFKislhOxEMzwVKUk8jm1QLPUzAAyrZvYNlqM8KHoGKkaRJAFwUqBni1uMeOFe3vIsFlfQ6A_-ypHJYqFwDtGTpg8ZmROk43gOuUU4d7JGRjfHyuNNRVuIJer8v7IxA5inKYaO78gUw/s400/87144439-C9BB-4A6C-88A7-C8D46BAA16AA.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In class I came up with a quick little picture to illustrate all three techniques. This is a project I could use with 4-H kids, and I bet they'd enjoy playing with the different mediums. It also demonstrates shading, as I mixed three different green colors for the tree itself. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The first of the instructor's techniques that she demonstrated was using plain wax from a normal tapered candle. Using the candle as a pencil before applying any paint creates a resist, where the waxed areas will not accept the paint. The instructor demonstrated this by using wax to portray snow on her mountaintops. In my little holiday tree painting, I used wax to highlight an area of the star where I wanted some shine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In the second technique demonstrated, paint is first applied. While the paint is wet, a piece of saran wrap is "stretched" so that it gets small lateral folds in the plastic wrap. this is laid on top of the area, and smoothed out by hand. I should have taken a photo of the plastic wrap while it was lying on my painting. Once dry, or at least mostly dry, the plastic wrap is lifted off of the painting, leaving texture to the paint. The instructor demonstrated this technique as a way to add life to water, whether horizontal, or vertical as in a waterfall. In my painting I used it to give texture to my tree boughs. The photo doesn't show it well but there is actually texture to all three shades of green. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Lastly, the instructor had salt in three different gradients for us to play with as a way to add texture. Table salt, Margarita salt, and Rock salt were shaken lightly across wet paint. Instantly, the salt would soak up the pigment. After the painting has dried, the salt can be wiped away. If left on a finished work displayed over time, the sodium could eat into a canvas. In a casual painting such as my holiday one, I found no need to wipe it away. I liked the rough texture left on the tree trunk in my painting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was supposed to spend the class time painting one of the instructor's samples that could be used to demonstrate the techniques she had shown us. But after doing my simple original drawing, I didn't have a lot of time to do a full-blown assignment. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I spent 30 minutes or so doing a quick impression of the painting above, and used some salt to make the colors bleed a little. Next week, I'll play along a bit better with the assignment.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started a masterpiece today in my Acrylics painting class that I'm taking this summer through Burbank Parks and Rec. This was my second class session, though technically it's the fourth, since I missed the first and third sessions due to work. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I did some homework since the last class and sketched my photograph of my beloved pup Caitie. I'd also bought a desk easel. I found it easier to paint with the canvas flat on the table, but it was helpful to have the photo I was painting upright in front of me. <br /><br />I could have started painting at home, but I wanted the input and guidance of our instructor. He suggested starting the painting with the eyes and nose, as the major body parts would give some form to what I was doing. I took his advice, but also wanted to paint the backdrop, so that when I did the dog's fur, I wouldn't lose the fuzziness of the edges by having to paint the backdrop afterward. The opportunity to break in a full new set of paints was luscious. It was fun to mix my own color shades beyond the twenty four colors the kit provided. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />To look at the painting, I feel like I've only put in two percent of what will be needed to finish it. But at least I've begun. I'm excited to see all these progress photos next to each other when I'm finally done. </div>

In
this week's watercolor class, our instructor Ms. McDonald gave a
lesson on color palettes and the use of expressive color and shading.
She explained that she'd taken lessons from the local painter Joseph
Stoddard, and used his examples to explain vivid use of color to us. In
her lecture, she quickly painted the tree above as an example, mixing
several shades of greens intuitively, then showing how Stoddard would
use a dark color to illustrate branches against a light background, and
switch to a light branch by removing or scraping the paint when it's
against a dark background. </div>

Our
instructor had Prismacolor Col-Erase 20048 Black pencils at each
station that she said were easy to sketch the outline of our drawing
because the pencil lines could be easily erased after we were done
without damaging the watercolor paints. <br />
<br />
We had three handouts on color combinations:</div>

Just
as last week, our instructor had a sampling of photos and clippings we
could choose from as an example to paint. The idea was to change the
photo to our own color interpretation. Above is the one that I chose,
before I knew the purpose of the assignment. I actually chose it
because I liked the tones in the photo, and the idea of a yellow house.
After the lecture, we had about an hour, or a little more, to do the
assignment in class. <br />
<br />
I tried to do clouds as I'd seen the
instructor demonstrate, by blotting with a paper towel or tissue paper.
My clouds retained the grid pattern from my paper towel. I wished I'd
had more time to play. Some students continue working on the assignment
at home during the week; I doubt I will make time for that during this
course. Mostly I left with a sense of creative inspiration from this
class. It will take some practice to feel like I've learned technique.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I made it to my first session of the Painting with Watercolors class offered through Burbank Parks & Rec at the Betsy Leuke Creative Arts Center classroom. It's actually the second week of the course, but I missed the first session due to work. A ten week summer session was $95, with an extra $10 fee because I'm not a Burbank resident. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This class is close to my heart as I'm getting to use art supplies that belonged to my late uncle, Dick Rosentreter. Dick was a museum curator at the Illinois State Museum and an artist by education. He passed away following an epileptic seizure in 1986 at the young age of thirty-eight. My sister had his art supplies for many years before passing them on to me. I organized them but never really used them for about fifteen years. I have a large piece of his artwork hanging in my living room, over my couch, so I think of him daily.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The watercolor course taught by Pam McDonald is welcoming but structured. A demo and critique is given each week on class and/or individual paintings. Each week will have a theme for the lesson. In today's class we studied reflections. A materials list was provided prior to the session; we brought our own paints, paper, and brushes. But the instructor had small magazine clippings that went with her theme which we could choose from as inspiration to paint. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Above is the magazine clipping that I picked from the instructors selection's. Actually, the teacher picked it for me when I asked her which one from the array would be easiest. I wanted an entry level project as I had no prior experience. See the little chips in the water? I thought that the clipping was just so old it was flaked and degrading. So when I painted it, I actually had the inspiration drawing upside down. Thus my painting below looks like it is backward left-to-right. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
It was fun to mix colors from a basic palette to make shades of green/blue/yellow. We were encouraged to work quickly and impressionistically, without paying too much attention to shape or detail. The professor showed me how to make the lines in the reflection to show the movement of the water, and to underline them with a darker color for better effect.<br /><br />I'm really not at all impressed with the work I did on this assignment but again I'm willing to share it in the hopes that I'll see improvement once I compare my last assignment at the end of the course. I'm keeping in mind that this endeavor is for fun, learning, and relaxation this summer. Can't wait to see what else I learn in the next eight weeks!</div>

I have a brief update on the 2019 garden. Since I lost all of my in-ground beds when the new owner took over the property about two years ago, I haven't talked much about gardening. But I do have a few things in pots, and am pleased with what has survived.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
It was painful to have to dig up everything I'd tended for years and give them away to friends. My most special bulbs went to a friend that had just bought a house, in hopes that someday I can get starts back from her. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I grew four kinds of tomatoes this year, planted mid-March, but the cold weather gave them a late start. They're also in pots, and as predicted Sungold Cherry has been my most prolific producer. I've gotten four or five Pineapples, and my the other two are just starting to fruit. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
My dahlia is nothing more than a stick in a pot for three quarters of the year. ever winter I think it's dead, but leave it alone to give it one more shot, and in the spring lo and behold! a shoot pops up. This year the flowers are only about two feet tall, but they are happy and seeking sun.</div>

I have two raised garden beds about three feet by two feet that are filled primarily with herbs. Along the back corner are two kinds of container grapes that are promising but the California weather has been so uneven the past few years that they've managed to survive but not really thrive. My herbs are lemon balm, sage, garlic chives, thyme, and sometimes rosemary. The back half of the first bed is filled with a few irises. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Having tried a basic drawing class at Barnsdall Art Barn, I'm ready
to move on to more specific techniques. I loved my instructor at
Barnsdall, but he takes summers off of teaching to return to Europe. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since
I'm still learning fairly universal and basic skills, I decided to look
closer to home at Burbank Parks & Rec for summer classes, and chose two: a Watercolor class, and a class in Painting with
Acrylics. Both are only ten minutes down the street from me at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center classroom. I missed the first watercolor class due to work, but was able to make it to the first session for the acrylics course. The goal of the acrylics class is to "create paintings that explore your artistic vision and discover techniques with the help of a visionary artist with three decades of professional experience." Our instructor, Johnathon Gallagher, was warm and welcoming to our first class, even making popcorn for the group. The class is no more than 10-15 students, sitting in a u-shaped row of tables. The materials list included a tabletop easel, canvas, and starter set of acrylic paints and brushes, some of which I already had. The eight-week course was $88, with an extra $10 fee because I am not a Burbank resident (I live in the neighboring area of North Hollywood).</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
I made it to the first class, but was really burnt out from six straight days of work. I didn't have an easel yet. The materials list mentioned a canvas no bigger than 16x20. Because I don't have much wall space in my apartment, I decided to start small, and just bought a package of four 8x10 canvases. Most folks in class seem to be working on bigger projects. </div>

The Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center building is a beautiful studio with professional showings of community work. The classroom is an open space in the corner of the studio. There's a small courtyard in back, and a separate smaller outbuilding housing the pottery studio. The CAC is adjacent to a park, so there's a sizeable parking lot and greenspace out front. It's a bright, cheery place to come to learn. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I did have something in mind--it's time to do a portrait of Caitie, the
pup I lost last September to a bee sting. Since she was only five when
she passed, I hadn't yet gotten a painting done of her. And I'd love to
match ones I have of Chance and Claire, done by a professional artist.
Those are 8x10 so that's who I bought the size of canvas that I chose.
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Anyway, I went to the first class expecting a bit of an introduction, lecture, inventory of what supplies were needed for what purpose. Instead our instructor Johnathon works by allowing us to paint, and offering help only where needed. It seemed most of the people in the room were continuing students that knew the plan. I took some time to pick the photo that I wanted to work from, and tried to sketch it out with his help. I didn't bring the printed out photo to sketch from, but was instead trying to draw from viewing the photo on my tiny phone. That was the biggest mistake. While I liked my first instincts, there were a few parts of my drawing I was unhappy with. When I asked for advice, the instructor erased the parts I was most happy with, and drew his own version of the face that I didn't think showed her personality. I felt the drawing was taken over and I wasn't happy with the results. So I scrapped it in favor of sketching in the quiet of home. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
My goal with the homework assignment was to sketch out my portrait of Caitie so that I can start painting in class tomorrow. A Sunday afternoon is a perfect time to sketch. But I think my new pup Callie understood that I was sad, missing Caitie, as I studied her photo. She stuck to me like glue, even sitting on my chest, making it difficult to draw. So I took a break for some puppy snuggles, and finished a bit later. I was glad I chose to sketch in daylight. I'll feel good going into class tomorrow prepared. <br />

The Pasadena Chalk Festival didn't disappoint once again in 2019. This annual fest held on Father's Day weekend each year at Paseo Colorado in Pasadena is so much fun to wander. The artists work in front of the public. The festival is judged and the public weighs in with text voting. </div>

Thanks to Melissa's Produce, I had an abundance to share with a friend last night. I went over to cook dinner for my friend Molly and I at her apartment. It's fun to make new things in an environment I wasn't familiar with. And thanks to the fresh ingredients I was able to bring with me, the prep wasn't too extensive or messy. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3z83b821_2tkYGkmbOlbL7MgeXcsfOUSXSPs_afaBYgcWlMhKteJ6atzcqPRGJ-pGF2yiz-IxUM1H1cnIpu7KM-0h7Ck9EYJSHKiqSVaA5maD0y6SLOThyDpnH2zYSy0RgaSMIc_gm5Q/s1600/4E03017D-1852-4CEE-B168-D95269CB1949.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3z83b821_2tkYGkmbOlbL7MgeXcsfOUSXSPs_afaBYgcWlMhKteJ6atzcqPRGJ-pGF2yiz-IxUM1H1cnIpu7KM-0h7Ck9EYJSHKiqSVaA5maD0y6SLOThyDpnH2zYSy0RgaSMIc_gm5Q/s320/4E03017D-1852-4CEE-B168-D95269CB1949.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For
a main course, I made a filling of Melissa's pre-cooked <a href="https://www.melissas.com/Cooked-Quinoa-p/1761.htm" target="_blank">quinoa</a>, which
comes in a tube. I simply fluffed the quinoa and added sliced <a href="https://www.melissas.com/Baby-Heirloom-Tomatoes-p/131.htm" target="_blank">baby heirloom tomatoes</a> and diced avocado, with a bit of salad dressing vinaigrette. I
sliced off the top of two <a href="https://www.melissas.com/Enjoya-Peppers-p/1563.htm" target="_blank">Enjoya peppers</a>, then used a spoon to clean
out the seeds. The quinoa salad mixture went easily into the peppers,
which were roasted at 450 degrees for about 20 minutes. The idea was to
soften the pepper without overcooking the prepared quinoa, hence the
high heat. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As a side, we had balsamic vinaigrette and everything bagel seasoning roasted <a href="https://www.melissas.com/Baby-Brussels-Sprouts-Flow-Wrapped-Package-p/1442.htm" target="_blank">Brussels sprouts</a>. After cutting off the ends of the Brussels sprouts, I first blanched them in boiling water for about a minute to reduce the bitterness of the sprouts. The bright green color of the sprouts once blanched is amazing. I then cut them in half lengthwise, and chiffonaded about three heads of <a href="https://www.melissas.com/Organic-Shallots-p/359.htm" target="_blank">shallots</a>. I tossed the sprouts and shallots in olive oil with a generous splash of balsamic vinegar and about two tablespoons of everything bagel seasoning. Roasting the veggies at 450 for about 35 minutes, stirring once halfway through, turned them crispy and flavorful. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The quality and freshness of Melissa's Produce products truly make my cooking the most flavorful meals I could ever serve. Mindfully choosing the products I use in my home is my way of caring for my family and friends, as well as taking care of myself. And by eating the freshest, I am willing to try foods normally out of my comfort zone, like Brussels sprouts (normally - ew, yuk!). When I prepare the best, I eat more variety. Look for Melissa's products in your local grocery store. </div>

Today was the last meeting of my Beginning Drawing class at Barnsdall Art Barn. I missed the first class due to an Easter vacation, and I missed class last week as I was working as a poll clerk for the June election. So in all I caught six classes of the eight week session.<br /><br />The assignment for today's class was to bring a mirror or photo in order to draw a portrait. Our instructor Rolandas had a packet of practice sheets and information about human anatomy drawing. He also had a still life set up for those that didn't bring anything to draw. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
With a printed out photo of my mom to draw, I smudged the paper with charcoal dust. After sketching the printed photo paper with guidelines to divide the face into quadrants, I sketched out the general shape of the face and laid in the shape of the eyes, mouth and hairline in pencil but then wasn't sure where to go, especially with the smudged paper, as we were then basically sketching in a negative, erasing rather than drawing. Rolandas came over to assist, and ended up basically erasing most of what I'd done, then demonstrated how he would have approached a portraiture. While I appreciated his technique, I felt I needed more time sketching before I was ready to approach an exact likeness. So I went back to his handouts and spent the rest of the class practicing.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Summertime fun! I felt like I was back at 4-H camp when I had the pleasure of taking a one day seminar on indigo dying at Barnsdall Art Park. Our instructor sent us an email ahead of class with a link to <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/avivamom/textile-dye-techniques/" target="_blank">her pinterest board</a> for ideas on what to do with our fabric. There were fourteen people registered for the class, so we had a nice group to chat with as we worked. We were advised to bring rubber gloves to wear and natural fiber fabrics to dye in class. <br />
<br />
Indigo is one of the oldest dyes used for coloring textiles and the one still used today to color denim jeans. Indigo comes from a plant thorough a process of fermentation. The dye that we used came in a kit, and the instructor had it pre-mixed to be ready for us. This saved time as the dye has to sit for about an hour once mixed before being used. The solution was made of dye powder, sodium carbonate, and sodium hydrosulfite. The prepared dye is a yellow-green color. When the fabric is removed from the dye vat it is initially this same color, but as the oxygen in the air reacts with the indigo, the color will turn blue. As the indigo oxidizes it becomes trapped within the fibers, making the dye permanent. </div>

A trip to the thrift store yielded a white shirt with some cute ruffles for just $5. Turns out to be a trendy brand, HandM. When I bought it I couldn't find the tags stating material, but luckily it was an all natural cotton fabric that would take the dye. </div>

Our instructor had chopsticks, corks, marbles, small boards, yarn, rubber bands, and water bottles that we could use to tie or embellish the fabric before dying.The fabrics have to stay in the bath for about thirty minutes, and our class was only four hours long. After an initial lecture/intro of about forty five minutes, we were left with limited time to creatively prep our items. </div>

I chose to focus on the ruffles of my shirt first. I used small marbles on the top ruffle, and larger ones on the bottom, wrapping them with rubber bands. It took longer than I would have thought to put so many details on the fabric! I then focused on the sleeves, adding the same small marble circles there. I wanted to do something fancier to the main front of the shirt but ran out of time. Frankly, that's probably a good thing. I would have muddled the design by overcomplicating it. And the places where I put accents will draw attention to the right areas of my body, rather than adding somethign weird to my bustline. </div>

The instructor put our items in to the dye bath by slowly sliding them in along the side of the bucket, to avoid oxygenating the pool of dye. After sitting in the covered bucket of dye for the required length of time, the items were wrung out carefully as they were removed from the bucket. This is where I needed my gloves, as I had to use an envelope cutting tool to remove all the rubber bands holding the marbles. It actually took quite a while to fully open the fabric! Being exposed to the air for about twenty minutes allowed time for the oxidization to take place. The instructor advised to lay the items out to fully dry at home, then to wash in a washing machine once or twice with rags to make sure all the extra dye is rinsed out. After that, the item should be completely color safe and free to wash with any other items. </div>

I had time to quickly do a second project in the class. One of the students was a theater kid who had brought a bolt of silk from his stock that he was kindly sharing. I took a piece long enough to wrap around me. I had very little time to prep this one, and wanted to try something different. So I folded the material into a smallish square, about nine inches. Then I used rubber bands to secure four sets of chopsticks around the square in a diamond shape. I was hoping I could twist the center into a rosette, but found there wasn't enough slack to do so. So I ended up utilizing a marble on each side of the fabric and left that for center texture. </div>

The finished silk fabric came out beautifully! the inner layers were lighter blue than the layers closest to the outside of my "package." I'll look forward to sewing this silk into a wrap or table runner soon. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
For my fourth week in drawing class, we did essentially the same as last week, using charcoal pencil and mechanical eraser after smudging the paper to create a drawing. To put a twist on it, our instructor brought some watercolors for us to experiment with underneath the smudged charcoal dust. The added pop of color gave a different dimension to the still life.<br />
<br />
The instructor had this example drawn by another student in an earlier class to demonstrate the powerful effect:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIUq2pZTESz8YjYXcM9fyLrK_hbi_4T5ylpsLtkS5O7YG5JAmo6LlLLQchxo-tvUn19mrmYgYYKWel7M-k_9WxgMC0zq-TNHDvE7inORDt2s38lWKsjnl5ge22kLPOOwyawEMDk9D15VI/s1600/IMG_8324%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIUq2pZTESz8YjYXcM9fyLrK_hbi_4T5ylpsLtkS5O7YG5JAmo6LlLLQchxo-tvUn19mrmYgYYKWel7M-k_9WxgMC0zq-TNHDvE7inORDt2s38lWKsjnl5ge22kLPOOwyawEMDk9D15VI/s320/IMG_8324%25281%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was my perspective of the still life from the left side of the classroom:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHV45LLENds1lMPhABwX2_NV8UIXfVOxAl9FQg0m6FSSUn-SGKGhQn1PNwxWrTcLkZIcMJ3gV00E3XVbm5AiGBroL5At3mEADR6M_cW8bbqzNa12K37ZrfoJ0CB9fOFSYxVVLEycSF3bI/s1600/IMG_8319.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHV45LLENds1lMPhABwX2_NV8UIXfVOxAl9FQg0m6FSSUn-SGKGhQn1PNwxWrTcLkZIcMJ3gV00E3XVbm5AiGBroL5At3mEADR6M_cW8bbqzNa12K37ZrfoJ0CB9fOFSYxVVLEycSF3bI/s400/IMG_8319.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The color was meant to be free-flowing and impressionistic rather than exact, but I was surprised at how much it showed after the smudging. Another student took the time to sketch basic shapes before watercolor treatment, and in the end I wished I'd done that, rather than free-handing it. </div>

I'm not very proud of this drawing - nor do I consider it finished - but it's a useful exercise. While I think I can sketch forms a little bit, I'm still learning how to interpret and implement values. Only three more sessions left!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For my third drawing class at Barnsdall Art Park (technically week four as I missed the first one), we used charcoal to draw a birch forest. Our instructor had a display board that laid out the steps, as well as his classroom demonstration.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
We first smudged the paper with charcoal dust, giving a darkly valued surface to work with. We were provided an example to copy, but encouraged not to hold strictly to that image. Once we had an idea of placement, we lightly sketched the foreground and background trunks, then used an eraser to remove the charcoal where light fell in the image. Detail was added with charcoal pencil 6B. Then lastly highlights were added with white charcoal pencil. A commercial fixative or hairspray is used to set the drawing once complete.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
After staring at a bowl of grapes for three hours in my first drawing class, I needed to complete something tangible. <br />
<br />
I just went to a bead show at Veterans stadium, and had focused on picking up findings there, so I had a double strand magnetic closure. I also picked up some czech glass beads for a dollar a strand. Michael's craft store had a 70% off sale, and one of the things I found were this really cool strand of stone composite beads with seahorses on them. Seahorses happen to be my personal totem, so this strand was made for me. <br />
<br />
I love making my own jewelry, and wear necklaces often. How do you mix it up when you need a new accessory? </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I've started taking a beginning art class at <a href="http://www.barnsdallartcenter.org/adult-classes/" target="_blank">Barnsdall Art Center</a>. Barnsdall is a nonprofit devoted to providing affordable, quality arts education to the Los Angeles area. The Barnsdall Art Park was donated by Aileen Barnsdall to the city in 1927. The Spring session lasts eight weeks, and their prices are quite reasonable. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I missed the first week of classes due to my Easter vacation to see family. I'm told they worked on perspective by focusing on boxes. For this class, the focus was on ellipses. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU45ImB3nBlu7CN3wvd9Ec-7tW8nHV2oGUXPjmmfSCnyqRkelAITnHsbkO6Nn4pIGhv2WT_-49YSUlEijs6obJZWUntX_mjqCw-90bfMPG9u8OABSbT3tDDYgeY9hwMLfDoJKV6e-yknI/s1600/22A27836-38FF-4857-8721-66D3D00C0DDD.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU45ImB3nBlu7CN3wvd9Ec-7tW8nHV2oGUXPjmmfSCnyqRkelAITnHsbkO6Nn4pIGhv2WT_-49YSUlEijs6obJZWUntX_mjqCw-90bfMPG9u8OABSbT3tDDYgeY9hwMLfDoJKV6e-yknI/s400/22A27836-38FF-4857-8721-66D3D00C0DDD.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The instructor set up a nice tableau of grapes and a water glass with one Mole light that cast a distinct shadow. After a short lecture, we were on our own to begin sketching. The instructor came around to each of us with individual comments and demonstration when we needed help. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
My biggest take away from the day is to always have lunch before class. I'm sure it'll get a lot more fun as the projects get more involved, but on this first day, I had a really hard time staring at a bowl of grapes for three hours. Anyway, practice makes perfect! I've never taken an art class like this, so I'm really excited to learn. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My mom and I both go gaga over cannolis. It's our favorite treat to seek out in bakeries or restaurants. I stumbled across an innovative twist that makes cannolis easy and fast to serve at home: ice cream cone cannolis! The fun presentation makes this sweet treat special. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As a no-bake recipe, this is a fun thing for kids to make. Older kids can make the filling. Younger children will like rolling the filled cones in a bowl of pistachios, then choc chips to garnish. <br />
<br />
What are your favorite no-bake desserts that feel decadent? </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Waffle Cone Cannolis</b></div>
<br />
1 16 oz Ricotta Cheese<br />
1 8 oz Mascarpone<br />
1 cup Powdered Sugar<br />
1 tsp Vanilla<br />
1/2 tsp Orange Zest<br />
2 tbsp Orange Juice<br />
1/2 c Mini Chocolate Chips, plus more for garnish<br />
1/4 c finely chopped Pistachios, plus more for garnish <br />
12 Waffle Cones<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Blend all but the waffle cones. Batter can be made ahead and refrigerated. Put well chilled filling into the cones using an ice cream scoop, melon baller or cookie dough scoop. Alternately, place the filling in a ziploc bag, and snip off one corner of the bag to use like a pastry bag, then simply squeeze the bag into each cone. Roll filled cones in the remaining pistachios and mini chips. Unused filling will store well in the fridge for several days, so fill only as many cones as you are serving. Serve immediately.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
My vacation week visiting my parents always involves lots of cooking in their huge beautiful kitchen. I love experimenting and making us lavish treats that I never have time to make at home. <br /><br />This week was no exception; in an experiment with a new recipe, new ingredients, and new equipment, I made my first waffle. My dad has long favored a recipe from a friend of the family for cornmeal waffles. I added a superfood berry to the recipe for an extra nutritional morning boost: <a href="https://www.melissas.com/Dried-Aronia-Berries-p/1440.htm" target="_blank">Dried Aronia Berries</a> from Melissa's Produce. Aronia Berries contain an antioxidant content three times as powerful as blueberries. The dried berries have a concentrated flavor that is much sweeter than that of fresh ones.<br /><br />The first attempt at using the waffle maker was definitely a practice round. Only through experience did I discover the right amount of batter to pour before closing the top of the waffle maker, and the proper whiff of steam that indicated a waffle was perfectly browned. </div>

I used a beautiful tray of Baby Zucchini from Melissa's Produce to make homemade Zucchini fries. They were creamy, crispy, and full of flavor! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Minimal prep led to a great dish. I simply cut the bottom and top off the small zucchini, and quartered them lengthwise. The second step was to toss in a bit of olive oil, and lay them out on a baking pan. I used my glass 8x10 Pyrex pan. I sprinkled them with garlic salt, smoked paprika, and a bit of Trader Joe's everything bagel seasoning. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Roasted at 400 degrees in a toaster oven for 25 minutes, the fries were a huge treat! I served them alongside a smoked paprika aoli. Have you made homemade fries from any vegetable? What's your favorite, and what are your tips for preparation?</div>
