Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is a big deal in Salt Lake City, with a huge festival at one of the major ski areas. So this year, I thought I'd look around for a way to celebrate here in LA. Surprisingly, I found several options. I haven't been to either of these yet, but I plan to explore them in October.

One is Old World Village in Huntington Beach. Their Oktoberfest is free admission all day Wednesday & Thursday, and before 6pm on Fridays. Sunday is only $5 admission, normally $15. This looks like a really interesting place, privately owned & family run. Their events page features some great ideas, like gingerbread house making in December, and even Daschund races every Sunday!

The other option is the Alpine Village Oktoberfest in Torrance. They're the oldest around, this year celebrating its 42nd consecutive year. They feature plenty of good food and entertainment including an authentic Oom Pa Pah Brass Band, direct from Germany. Dancing plus hilarious contests like yodeling, pretzel eating, wood sawing, beer stein holding, and of course teh famous Chicken Dance for everyone to join in. Admission to the Oktoberfest is $8--Friday & Saturday (21yrs & over only)--Sunday is Family Day. Check out the link above for their Beer Garden Schedule.

  1. Happening this weekend: LA Oktoberfest

    http://www.laoktoberfest.com/index.html

Held at the LA MART, 1933 S. Broadway, LA, Ca 90007. Sample traditional German Foods, Beers, Wines, Spirits, the hottest buxom beer maidens serving Bavarian brews; Bavarian bands playing lively tunes and leading sing-along's of old time drinking songs.
