Beach Salvage Stained Glass Panel

Stained Glass Sunday: I found this piece of glass just lying on Venice Beach. It looked like a reject from a rental home where no one cared for it. It may have come from a transom, or a cabinet door. In fact, I thought someone had painted each panel to add some color to the piece.

I took it home to Utah one Thanksgiving weekend, deconstructed it and repaired it fully. In one weekend, this looked like a completely different project!

To keep the integrity of the original project, I only wanted to replace those couple pieces that were broken. So, once disassembled, I had to figure out how to remove the "paint" that had been applied. To my surprise, I found that it was simply crayon! I dipped each piece of glass in boiling water, and the wax came right off. I was then able to match the broken glass to textures already in my stock. Though the original project was leaded, I chose to use copper foil, with zinc came framing.

This ended up being a beautiful Christmas present for my good friend Shannon in SLC. I just saw her, and she told me she still enjoys this in her home to this day, and gets compliments from visitors on it. I'm so glad it's appreciated.
