Grilled Cheese Invitational Hits Downtown

The Seventh Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational is happening downtown LA this coming Saturday, April 25th! A contest created just for me! I alone am keeping the state of Wisconsin from feeling the effects of the current recession for at least a decade by the amount of cheese consumed in my home.

From their website:

"The Grilled Cheese Invitational (GCI) is the largest, craziest, and most exciting Grilled Cheese cooking contest in the country and is the best thing to happen to sliced cheese since sliced bread! The GCI promotes an almost scary pursuit of perfection in a Grilled Cheese Sammich and allows for amateur and professional chefs to compete side-by-side in the hopes of becoming a true Grilled Cheese Champion.

The event was created by Tim Walker in 2003, in private artist loft in Downtown Los Angeles as a competition between friends. Since then, the Invitational has grown into a national movement dedicated to perfecting the art of grilled cheese, with thousands of cheese fiends and regional competitions across the country."

Entry into the festival is only $5. If you want to compete, there's a $10 charge but you must be pre-registered. Check out their website link above for more details and exact location.

Want to meet me there? Leave a comment for me below, and I'll be looking for you!

  1. Wow! What crowds! I met a friend at the event about 230P, and was surprised to find a mile-long line to buy tickets and enter the park. Don't know why--didn't seem like there were crowd control issues at all. Within five minutes, a guy walking past the end of the line towards his car in the lot said the competition samples were all out, that the only food available would be regular Kraft American singles on white bread, not any of the interesting combinations. This man said he'd waited an hour and a half only to get to teh front of the line just after the "judge" coupons (redeemable for samples) had run out, so he'd gotten a refund for his money. About a minute later a volunteer was announcing the status of the samples, and saying the entrance fee was now two-for-one (two people/$5). My friend and I left and wandered Chinatown for several hours this afternoon. Next year I'll have to volunteer, or at least show up two hours prior to the start of the festival so I can get "judging" tickets!
